2024 marks 10 years of Marionette, a Toronto-based label which has carved out a special place on our shelves and expanded our listening experiences with its wide array of exploratory sounds.
To mark the occasion, on Sunday, July 28th, we’re having a special Marionette showcase in store, hosted by label founder Ali Safi with live sets from MinaeMinae and David Edren. Ali will play music under his DJ moniker grimwig before, during, and after the concerts.
MinaeMinae
MinaeMinae is multidisciplinary artist Bastian Epple. In his hands, musical material takes on the essence of documentary footage which he would cut up, repitch, and rearrange freely. Nontypical rhythms and colourful synthetic and analogue sounds take you off the well-trodden path and into a landscape that brims with novelty and sounds that move with vivacity.
David Edren
Artist and composer David Eden’s collage of music and creative projects hold a reverence for flora and fauna, undertones of meditative restraint, and a carefully crafted sense of beauty. Conceptual ideas come to life in fluid, calming synth melodies.
grimwig
Ali Safi relies on intuition to form a dialogue bridging the disparate worlds that inspire a growing catalogue of oddball releases. Under his grimwig moniker, he carefully selects and blends records into seamless mixes suited for beanbag ambient nights all the way to the smokey afterhours.
