This outstanding edition consists of work composed and recorded in 1984-1987 by Maggi Payne, for Technological Feets - a performance group, led by video artist Ed Tannenbaum, which daringly combined dance, live video processing and music.
Originally trained as a flautist, Payne fell under the spell of electronic music at the University of Illinois; over the course of a career spanning more than 30 years, she's studied with the likes of Robert Ashley, David Behrman and Gordon Mumma. For this particular commission, Payne worked with an Apple II computer and several early sampling devices to create vibrant, pulsating soundscapes suffused with dreaminess and drama. Populated with buoyant pulses, graceful analogue swells, dense fog-like drones and cascading rhythms that shift in space, AHH-AHH is a vital document of not only these early collaborations, but of computer based music as well.
